Little Ducky Jr. and the Whirlwind Storm

Story Synopsis

Little Ducky Jr. and the Whirlwind Storm tells the story of Little Ducky Jr., or Junior, as his family calls him. Junior is a duckling who loves his home in the Old Metry Pond just south of the Big Lake. Junior’s family, like so many others in the pond, evacuate when a Whirlwind Storm heads their way. Upon returning to the Old Metry Pond, Junior has to face the damage caused to the pond by the Whirlwind Storm. The tale tells of Junior’s loss, but more importantly tells of his sense of hope as he realizes that his friends and family are truly his most important treasures in his pond.

History of LDJ and disaster uses

The tale of Little Ducky Junior was created by Dr. Carlos Reinoso, a child psychologist living in the region of Louisiana impacted by Hurricane Katrina. Dr. Reinoso wrote the story in an attempt to give parents a tool with which they could discuss the issues of loss and recovery regarding Hurricane Katrina with their children. The story has a universal appeal to children of all ages and can be applied not just to children who have lived through hurricanes, but any natural disaster. Dr. Reinoso has included a Parent’s Guide at the end of the story which gives tips for how to discuss disaster issues with children. The story has been used in families, school settings, and mental health settings.
