The Story behind Little Ducky Jr.

On August 28, 2005, Carlos and his wife Stacy, along with their three children, Connor (age 12), Kailey (age 10), and Devin (age 6) evacuated their Kenner, Louisiana home like so many other residents of the area in an attempt to flee from what would be the largest natural disaster in U.S. history, Hurricane Katrina. While away from home, Carlos pledged to his wife that upon their re-entry into their community, he would find a way to help the community.

Upon returning home on September 5, 2005, Carlos found his house and office significantly damaged. The family worked for several weeks to remove storm debris and clean out the damaged sections of their home and office. During that time, Carlos felt the need to also reach out to the community, but as only one psychologist, he could not touch the number of lives that he wished.

One night he sat down and in what he calls an inspiration was able to create the tale of Little Ducky Junior and the Whirlwind Storm. He then went about sharing the story with friends and family to overwhelming positive response. He developed a growing awareness that a tool was needed which families could use to discuss tragic natural disasters with their children.

Upon word spreading about the book in the local media, interest in Little Duck Jr. has grown. In less than one month, over three thousand books have been printed. While many have sold in the southeast Louisiana region, the story book has also found its way as far west as California and as far east as Florida. A copy of Little Ducky Jr. has also made its way to the White House.

It is the hope of the author that Little Ducky Jr. and his tale may bring some sense of context to children who have been affected or displaced by natural disasters.
